How we got started in Lawn Services!

Growing up my family barely had enough to make ends meet. Our community had a program for low income families that connected teens to local companies, to learn skills and make some extra money.

That summer I began work in the Marion National Cemetery here in Marion Indiana at the VA Campus. The staff that worked there full time took me under their wing, or so I thought. Looking back it was more than likely they had a strong young person to handle some of the more labor intensive tasks.

As the season progressed, I was taught how to use many different tools and equipment. First was the line trimmer, trimming fences and headstones for what seemed like miles. I still remember the lesson I learned on how to load line back into the head when I ran out.

Once the trimming was caught up it was on to power washing. Power washing headstones was a little tedious, but it was an instant result and gratification. Going from a bland grey color to bright white. Some of our soldiers had been there since the late 1800's.

We grew our own sod there on the campus as well. I learned how to prepare the soil and plant the grass seed to later be cut and rolled. We used this sod to cover fresh graves and also other bare dirt areas of damage.

We planted flowers and trees, setup Flags, prepared graves for funerals and returned those graves to the appearance of undisturbed ground. I learned lots of skills during my time there.

Having several veterans in our family, I had a sense of pride in what I was doing. Even as a teenager I felt like I was able to care for those veterans and their families by taking care of the property and making everything as neat and clean as possible.

We still carry a love of country and our service men and women. Our organization volunteers through Project Evergreen. Project Evergreen connects active duty families to volunteer companies to provide no cost services to those you can use them.

We love what we do, working in and with nature. The beauty God has created all around us, regardless of the weather, is a blessing in itself. We work to be good stewards and live to serve others.
